The Benefits of Silk For Skin

During my time in Japan, I learned there is a timeless saying about maiko, or young apprentice geisha: “If you look closely at a maiko’s skin, it is made of pure silk.”
I knew that silk has been treasured for thousands of years, beloved by royalty and emperors alike. The luxurious fabric was a favorite of Cleopatra’s, and was once so valuable it was used as a currency. The geisha were no exception—for centuries, they have slept, bathed in and enrobed themselves in silken kimono, which can cost tens of thousands of dollars and weigh up to 40 pounds.
I was surprised to learn about the many benefits of silk for the skin. Our Tatcha Institute skincare scientists taught me that silk is composed of two parts: sericin and fibroin.
Fibroin, the inner part of the silk strand, is known for its ability to nourish skin, resulting in a healthy, luminous glow.
Sericin, the outer part of silk, contains 18 amino acids and closely parallels the structure of our skin; this is what makes silk feel so gorgeous against our bodies.
Together, they marry effortlessly with the skin, allowing the powerful antioxidants and amino acids to help condition and nourish the skin. The whisper-thin network they create forms a protective veil of hydration, holding in essential moisture and supporting the skin’s barrier function.
We wanted to harness the dual protective and nourishing benefits of silk in creating The Silk Canvas. Our scientists at the Tatcha Institute recreated the complete benefits of silk for the skin by combining fibroin, sericin and Silk powder for truly silken skin.
The end result is a skin-protecting, makeup-perfecting primer for healthy, lustrous, filter-finish skin—spun from the best of both worlds. It is our honor to bring you this treasure, evolved from the geisha’s timeless rituals and the powers of pure silk.
Always,
